Loving the city...

Clementine and Elephant

This last weekend we were loving our city memberships. Saturday we decided to go to the new DeYoung museum, and didn't make it there until an hour before closing. It just took that long to get out of the house. Without a membership we might have skipped it... but it's so nice to just wander in for an hour!! Added bonus: the scuplture garden, with poop-free grass!

Then Sunday we headed to the zoo. It was a rainy day, but yay, we have a membership, so we could bail if it really rained. The zoo was sparsely populated with people just like us: members with kids who have been indoors for the last month and are going outside no matter what, damnit.

Frankly, it was lovely, it didn't rain, and it wasn't crowded. The zoo has lots of these sculptures with padding all around, and Clementine really enjoyed playing with the elephant. She's pretty interested in trying to walk these days. Ryan and I found ourselves, each holding one hand, looking at one another over a child's head. Whoa. This is a whole other parental experience. Later on Sunday, Clementine was squatting and then, without holding on to anything, just stood up. All by herself. Whoa, indeed.

"Mama", finally

For months and months now, we've been trying to teach Clementine to say or sign "Mama". To sign "mother" spread all five of the fingers of your right hand, then turn it at a 90* angle to your chest and tap your thumb to your chin. "Father" is the same, but you touch your thumb to your forehead.

These little tutoring sessions go like this:
Me: (touching thumb to chin) Mama, mama, mama, mama, mama
Clementine: (pause) Dah! (touching thumb to head)
Me: (touching thumb to chin) Mama, mama, mama, mama, mama
Clementine: (pause, blink, blink) Dah!
Me: (sigh)

Finally, on Wednesday, she said "Mama". Thursday too. Not Friday or Saturday, but today she's saying it again. It's SO CUTE.
